Ceci N'est Pas Une Magritte
Photomontage by Dug North
Made for a class in the History of Communications Technology in 1996. Still no Photoshop used, but this one required a little hand painting around the face.
This is, of course, a mashup of Rene Magritte's famous work and Andy Warhol's famous work.
The bizarre thing about this image is that it has been a very high-ranking Google image search result for the term "Magritte" for a long time.
I'm wondering if there are people out there who have looked up Magritte and mistaken this for one of his. Because Google
has an authority all its own now, it's easy to assume that a top result for an artist must be by that artist. Not so.
The title Ceci N'est Pas Une Magritte (This is not a Magritte) is both a tip of the hat to his This is not a pipe painting
but also a disclaimer of sorts. And just as Warhol "borrowed" from corporate images, I have borrowed them from him.
It's fun to wonder how each artist would have felt about what I have done here.
